RFM Spruce up event

March 25, 2023 ~ 9:00am to 1:00pm

In preparation for our Museum Opening on April 1st, RFM will be hosting a "Spruce Up Campus" event.  As we look forward to an exceptional year, please sign up to help our Museum present a great first impression to visitors, members, and the general public!  We will be doing general campus cleanup/pickup, weeding and trimming, as well as some repair/replacement/cleanout projects.


We have selected a backup rain date of Saturday April 8th. Although this date is after our opening day event, these projects are still important and your help is much needed!

Project and Tool List

General Campus CleanUp/PickUp – You will need work gloves, wheel barrow, cart, rake, cleaning products, bucket, sponge, soap, rags, pickup truck or trailer to haul stuff to Recycling Center


1. Pick up oyster shells in side yard between Foggy River and Walker House; get rid of concrete block under Foggy River; throw out old black wooden steps next to Foggy River; reinstall yellow plastic on guy wire near Foggy River

2. Get rid of broken plastic trash cans stored behind Butler; keep the good ones

3. Get rid of bucket of dirt between Pavilion and Covington

4. Get rid of old wood and other stuff between Pavilion and Covington

5. Old wooden door and wooden winder stored between Walker House entrance and kitchen

6. Get rid of old bricks on ground between Walker House and Covington walkway

7. Pilot House – Clean inside and outside, including steps; get rid of old wood near fence; get rid of old flower pots, etc., under porch; get rid of concrete block under rear steps

8. Foggy River – clean/wash sides and topsides, including cabin exterior

9. Pick up tree branches left of Covington near Pilot House

10. Move/get rid of several wooden beams near Covington side porch

11. Rear Lower Deck - Get rid of old police tape near lower deck and install new tape; get rid of old boards, other old wood, old wooden saw horse, etc.

12. Rake up and get rid of all pine straw around Covington


Weeding and Trimming – You will need work gloves, clippers, trimmers, rake, shovel, chain saw for trimming large bushes at shoreline, boots for working along shoreline, wheel barrow or cart, pickup truck or trailer


1. Front fence along Main Street – outside and inside fence; clean off weeds/bushes/branches on fence near mailbox

2. Side fence next to church parking lot from Main Street to train shop and all around Boat Shop and Covington Building

3. Butler Building - Trim bushes in front and on both sides of building and pick up old trimmings under bushes in front; trim/weed behind heat pump; connect garden hose to faucet; weed all around the building

4. Walker House and yard between Walker House and Foggy River– trim all bushes in side yard; weed/trim all around outside of Walker House

5. Clear out bushes/weeds between back of Walker House and walkway to Covington

6. Weed/trim front corner garden near entrance from Main Street 

7. Trim bushes behind Boat Shed; trim/weed Covington Garden, which is near steps to side entrance

8. Trim as necessary along shoreline; trim large bushes/trees on shoreline near entrance to dock using chain saw/branch clippers, etc. 

9. Festival Halle - Trim bushes and weed all around


Repair/Replacement/Clear Out Projects – You will need shovels, wheel barrow or cart, drill, screws and screw driver, work gloves, bucket for carrying away stuff, putty knife or scraper to remove tiles, digging tools, electric saw for cutting wood lattice to size, carpentry tools, cleaning products, soap, bucket, sponges, rags


a. Fill in two holes in the ground behind pavilion

b. Reinstall downspout near left rear of pavilion and connect to drain

c. Clean out upstairs bathroom in Butler Building

d. Remove tiles from shower in bathroom on main floor of Butler Building

e. Walker House - install dehumidifier, including drain on first floor; move large fan to second floor and connect to electric outlet

f. Install various campus direction signs, such as the sign pointing to the dock, etc.

g. Install wooden lattice under sides of Covington Building

h. Replace all HVAC filters in Butler Building and Covington Building

i. Replace all burned out lightbulbs in Watermen’s Gallery and elsewhere on campus

j. Festival Halle – open front and back doors and turn on fans to air out the building for a couple of hours; replace all HVAC filters


THE MUSEUM WILL PROVIDE TRASH BAGS, TRASH CANS, LADDERS, ETC.
