The
Pendelton Building was added to our campus during the 2003
expansion program. It provides the shop space and modern facilities
for two of the RFM's major programs, Boat Building and Model
Making. These activities support our education programs and
special events held throughout the year, such as Family Boat
Building weekends and display of the Northern Neck Railroad.
Model
Workshop and Northern Neck RR

Model
making has become a very important element in our mission
to preserve the heritage of the Northern Neck and the lower
Bay. Models of Chesapeake Bay workboats, historic homes
and other significant structures are continually being added
to our displays and dioramas. Much of the model making has
been accomplished by a group of highly talented volunteers
who meet regularly throughout the year to research and build
these well-detailed models. Model building classes are
offered by the museum and are conducted by skilled modelers
from the region. Much of the model making activity centers
on the Northern Neck RR - "the railroad that never
was."

Our
modelers meet every Thursday at 10am

The
Little Railroad That (Finally) Could

Photo
by W. C. Kepner
The
Northern Neck Railroad and Power Co. was supposed
to provide a land link from Fredericksburg, Virginia
to this sparsely populated peninsula between the Potomac
and Rappahannock rivers. The idea was born in 1920,
but died the following year when too few investors
bought stock to support it. More than 75 years later,
the railway became a reality-albeit at HO scale. Thanks
to model railroaders, the NNRR&P has run every
holiday season for the last six years at the RFM and
is soon to be on permanent display. It's also gotten
progressively longer, with branches to White Stone
and Irvington.
